The BMWO 5A Grading System and What Does it Mean?

As one of the oldest and most trusted online dispensaries in Canada, Buy My Weed Online stocks one of the largest selections of premium marijuana in the country. Known for our commitment to quality, at BMWO we use a 5A grading system to carefully curate the weed we provide to our customers.

Our 5A system is a bit unique compared to other, more commonplace rating systems, and this article will help you understand exactly how we grade our marijuana and ensure that the product you get is top-notch.

Let’s dive in!

What’s a marijuana rating system anyways?

Before we start talking about our own rating system, you should know why we need one in the first place. Just like with anything else, there’s good weed and bad weed. With so many different dispensaries, suppliers and strains available on the market today, customers need to be sure about the quality of what they’re buying.

That’s exactly what a rating system is. It’s just a measure of how good a strain is, taking into account factors like cannabinoid (THC, CBD etc) profile and percentage, potency, way it burns, nose, and size of nugs.

What’s the standard marijuana rating system?

Here’s where it gets interesting. You might be thinking with the legalization of medical and recreational marijuana in Canada, and with so many government run dispensaries operating across the country, there would be a standard rating system that everyone follows.

Well, there really isn’t any!

Not in Canada, and certainly not worldwide. With so many different dispensaries, suppliers and strains, every weed market in the world pretty much has their own unique way of measuring marijuana quality, and that’s the case here as well.

Considering the fact that so many different factors determine how good a certain variety is, it’s no wonder everyone pretty much uses any system they like. The same strain can be described as a quad by one dispensary or supplier and as a AAAA+ strain by another. The AAAA system is quite popular today, but the fact remains that it is as arbitrary as any other.

Some communities, such as Leafly, use a 0-100 scale for grading weed. Others, such as Colorado Cannabis Tours, a US-based cannabis touring company, uses its own terminology for grading weed e.g. Dank, Top-Shelf, Mid-grade, and bad reggie weed. Similarly, Colorado Pot Guide, a US-based MOM directory, grades weed naming the lowest quality weed as “Schwag” and the highest quality flower as “Premium, Specialty or Connoisseur”.

You might be wondering, how did this come to be? And more importantly, how do I judge whether I’m really getting the quality I want? To answer these questions, we need to look at a little history first.

A little background…

It wasn’t until the 80s that the AA rating was used to describe cannabis flower. This was when the terms “Double A” (AA) and “Triple A” (AAA) came into use. “Single A” (A) simply meant that the quality was terrible, while a Triple A rating meant that it was the best quality weed available.

Then came the 90s and with it a lot of new strains and hybrids. This is when these common rating terms began evolving as well. With so many new strains available, suppliers starting adding variations to the Single, Double and Triple A rating so that they could describe their effects more accurately.

This is when terms like low dub (a low-range double A), and high Trip (highest end of the spectrum for all Triple A strains) came into use. People starting grading weed based on a lot more criteria than they did before. Suddenly, it wasn’t just about the effects and factors like bud size and aesthetics started playing a role.

The 2000s saw the use of the term quads, because not only were there so many new kinds of flowers available, there were also too many Trips. A new rating was needed to describe the weed which was even better, and quads or 4A came into regular use.

Fast forward to 2019, and today it’s even crazier, or rather the craziest it’s ever been. Not only are there multiple grades of the same strains, but with recreational cannabis being legal, people are looking to get as high as possible.

Today there are all kinds of grading systems being used and even the popular AAAA system doesn’t look anything like it did back in the 2000s. Today you might get AAAA+ or even AAAA++ weed and the same rating will not even mean the same thing if you’re buying from different brands. Some might grade their weed only on potency, while others may factor in only the aesthetics of the flower. This is where you need to be careful. In an ever-expanding industry, it is very easy for these terms to get thrown around and misused, especially when everyone has their own opinion and everyone is “right”.

Furthermore, as opposed to what some critics of our grading system believe, BMWO is definitely not the only MOM using a 2A – 5A grading system. There’s a growing number of MOMs employing this as well.

The BMWO 5A system

So how does the Buy My Weed Online system work and why does it have 5 As? Well, BMWO has been around for a long time. The team behind BMWO has an experience of over 40 years in the industry, far longer than most other dispensaries out there. When Buy My Weed Online started out, it followed the same rating culture that the other suppliers were using – dubs, trips, and eventually quads as things evolved.

However, as the market started expanding and more and more of these new dispensaries started abusing the rating system by selling trips as quads, something had to be done. BMWO has always put its customers first and this certainly was not something they could get behind.

So, with so many sellers abusing the 4A rating, and so many strains available that were even better than quads, the Buy My Weed Online team decided to introduce a new rating stage. The new 5A rating would be used for the strains and buds on the higher end of the 4A spectrum, the really premium ones.

So how does it work?

Basically, the 5A system is no different than any other rating system out there. If you like, you can read 5A as 4A+, or 4A++ and it would mean the same thing. However, for the convenience of all our customers, we would like to highlight each rating stage anyways. The main reason we sell everything, from AA to AAAAA is that we consider it a privilege to be able to provide the best quality marijuana to our customers, and we do not want anyone to miss out.

2A (AA)

The 2A (AA) rating can be synonymous with dubs. This is the lowest end of the BMWO rating spectrum. While these nugs certainly won’t be as beautiful and will not have as much THC as the higher ranking flowers, they will still get you high. This budget-level tier is designed to appeal to users who cannot pay the high prices that come with 3,4, or 5A product and desire the BMWO quality. When ordering from us, you can be sure that all your weed has been carefully inspected and graded by professionals. The fact that it’s 2A doesn’t mean it’s going to be weed that has gone bad. At BMWO we simply do not stock any bad flower.

3A (AAA)

The mid-range of the spectrum, 3A product is simply trips. A few years back these were as high as you could go, but today growing techniques and breeders have improved a lot resulting in higher ranking strains. Mid-budget users need not worry though, because our 3A strains still pack a nice punch while being much easier on the pocket than 4A or 5A weed. Again, users can rest assured because the BMWO quality is guaranteed.

4A (AAAA)

This is for users who can afford a higher pricing range product. All BMWO 4A strains are true quads and one of the most premium buds you can find on the market. These strains will rank high in all criteria including THC/CBD content, ash, burn smoothness, aesthetics, size, and trichome quantity. Once again, the BMWO zero compromise on quality policy goes without saying.

5A (AAAAA)

This is the most premium marijuana that you can buy and we stock one of the largest collections of 5A strains in the market. It doesn’t matter if you call it AAAA+, AAAA++, or high quads, the fact remains that these are the most potent, beautiful and highest quality strains available in the market.

When ordering a 5A strain from BMWO, users can be sure that the product they get will be the most exquisite marijuana they have ever seen, rolled, or smoked. Each and every aspect from THC/CBD content, trichome quantity, potency, and aesthetics will be higher than what any 4A strain can reach. In terms of the market today, 5A is quite simply, the best quality weed you can buy online. There is no higher rating than this.

The BMWO advantage

Buy My Weed Online is not just another online dispensary, and we don’t consider weed just a business. The founders and friends behind BMWO have been a very vocal driving force behind the legalization of marijuana in Canada and it is our honour and privilege to provide customers across the country with the best quality of marijuana possible.

When ordering from BMWO, you can rest assured that all our product has been carefully curated and graded by the best, most experienced team in the industry.

The 5A rating system is designed to make great quality weed accessible to all kinds of users and to make it easier for them to choose the strains they want based on price range and potency.
